Drivers Head North as Fuel Prices Surge in the South, Customs Reports Increased Fuel Seizures

Drivers across Cyprus are increasingly crossing the Green Line into the northern part of the island to take advantage of cheaper fuel following recent price hikes in the Republic of Cyprus. Speaking to state broadcaster RIK, Customs Department spokesman Yiorgos Konstantinou confirmed that motorist trips across the checkpoints to refuel have risen steadily in recent months.

Although the department does not record the exact number of private vehicles passing through the border control points, enforcement statistics clearly reflect the surge in activity. As reported by Haravgi newspaper, fuel seizures managed by customs officers at crossing points have shown a sharp upward trend.

During the first six months of 2026, the volume of confiscated fuel spiked significantly. Monthly illegal fuel seizures rose from previous levels of between 150 and 200 litres up to around 500 litres per month, as more drivers attempted to transport excess fuel back into the south.

Customs officials have issued a reminder to all road users regarding the legal limits enforced under the Green Line Regulation. While private motorists are legally allowed to fill their vehicle's primary fuel tank in the north for personal use, carrying fuel in external containers, commercial units, or jerrycans remains strictly prohibited and subject to immediate confiscation.
