Groups of young riders have announced a mass electric scooter and e‑bike gathering in Nicosia for Halloween night.
A video and poster circulating on social media set the meeting for 5.30 pm on 31 October at Lidra Parking and invite all electric scooters and electric bicycles to join.
The material has been passed to police who say they will examine it, while traffic officers told Phileleftheros last week that they cannot yet seize scooters because the decree granting that power has not taken effect.
Once the decree is active, scooters can be confiscated if they are ridden by children under 17, used in prohibited areas, or capable of exceeding 25 kilometres per hour. Residents who contacted the newspaper warn that large group rides with wheelies on main roads endanger pedestrians, drivers and the riders themselves, and they urge authorities to act before an accident occurs.
The poster also carries the slogan Riding is not a crime and a line stating that the organisers are taking revenge for the attempt to destroy their dreams, while the video includes screenshots from the recent Phileleftheros report and footage of riders performing wheelies on the A1 and A6 motorways. Police have confirmed they will monitor the event and coordinate with the Department of Road Transport to enforce the upcoming regulations, and the Ministry of Transport has signalled that the seizure decree will be published in the coming weeks.
