Torrential rain has struck the Limassol-Paphos highway, leaving significant water around the tunnel and its nearby alternative routes. Cyprus Police issued the warning on Thursday, noting that the downpour created hazardous conditions for motorists using the key artery that links the southern coast with the interior.
Officers urged drivers to exercise caution, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and switch on their headlights. They also reminded all road users to obey traffic regulations and road signs in order to reduce the risk of collisions during the wet spell.
Earlier on the same day police reported that other sections of the main road network were operating without problems, highlighting that the disruption was localized to the Limassol-Paphos stretch. This route carries a high volume of commuters, tourists and freight traffic, making any impairment a notable concern for island-wide travel.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise anyone planning to travel through the area to check for updates before departure and to adjust speed according to the prevailing conditions. They also recommend that drivers avoid sudden braking and use lower gears when descending steep sections to maintain control.
