Police arrested a 17‑year‑old driver on Monday after he fled a routine check in Aglantzia, Nicosia, and slammed into a car driven by a woman, leaving her injured.
According to officers, the patrol signalled the vehicle to stop at approximately 11 am. The teenager ignored the directive and accelerated away, cutting across the path of the woman's car as he tried to escape. She was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where she received first aid and was later discharged.
During the stop police discovered a quantity of substances suspected to be drugs in the teenager's possession and a preliminary drug test returned positive. Breath tests administered to both drivers showed no alcohol present.
The incident serves as a stark reminder for motorists across Cyprus that failing to comply with police signals and driving under the influence of drugs carries serious legal penalties and endangers every road user. Cyprus Police regularly conduct checkpoints to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and to detect impaired driving.
