A Disy delegation visited Strovolos town hall on Tuesday to highlight pressing infrastructure and social service needs. Mayor Stavros Stavrinides emphasized the importance of upgrading the road network, calling for improved connections along key corridors. The visit brought together the mayor, deputy mayor Stella Sourmeli, and several MPs including Giorgos Pamborides, Andreas Constantinou, Charalambos Petrides, and Demetris Demetriou. The delegation focused on three major priority areas that affect daily life for residents and visitors alike.
Specific road improvements were identified as critical to the town's future development. Mayor Stavrinides noted that Ifigenias avenue requires immediate upgrading to handle growing traffic volumes. Work should also begin on the road connecting Archangelos and Strovolos avenues and on the Alexandroupoleos street bridge. Additionally, he called for the linking of Constantinoupoleos and Demetris Christofias avenues to create a more efficient transportation grid. These projects align with broader plans for greater administrative autonomy and increased state funding aimed at modernizing Strovolos infrastructure.
Housing and environmental concerns dominated the discussion as well. Deputy mayor Stella Sourmeli detailed ongoing challenges at refugee estates where delays have plagued the implementation of the KtiZo programme launched in April 2023 with a budget of €130 million. She highlighted that property owners face difficulties and proposed that Disy raise these issues in parliament. The delegation also flagged significant delays in leasing properties tied to the former Strovolos cooperative bank, underscoring the need for targeted financial support. Residents expressed additional frustrations including traffic congestion, illegal parking, poor cleanliness, and insufficient green spaces throughout the town.
