A severe weather system moved across Cyprus bringing intense rain and strong winds. The storm began in Paphos with river overflows that made the Pegeia‑Lara road impassable and closed the Avakas Gorge. Tourists present in the gorge were advised to leave the area. Heavy rain also affected Pisouri, Erini, Episkopi, Sotira in Limassol district and Kokkinotrimithia in Nicosia district.
In the mountains a tree fell on the Orkodas‑Pedoulas road, prompting a temporary closure that was later cleared. Torrential rain in the Limassol highlands reduced visibility because of fog. Landslides and rock falls were reported on the Platres‑Troodos, Amiantos‑Troodos and Kalou Chorio‑Zoope routes. Mud accumulated on the road at Platania in Nicosia district, making driving hazardous and prompting warnings for motorists.
The Fire Service and Civil Defense were placed on high alert. Crews responded to calls in Pegeia, Poleni and Polis Chrysochous, clearing drains, pumping water from flooded basements and removing fallen trees. Power outages began shortly after 3 p.m. in parts of Paphos and Limassol districts. Kato Arodes lost power, and additional outages were recorded in Akoursos at 16:24, above Arodes at 15:03, Inia and Katia at 15:06, and a section of Pegeia at 15:19. A large fault around 14:30, likely caused by lightning or branches on AEK cables, delayed restoration. The major fault in Pegeia has been repaired.
Aviation was also affected when a Glasgow‑to‑Paphos flight was diverted to Larnaca due to stormy conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge drivers to exercise caution while emergency teams work to restore services.
