Nicosia Announces Road Closures and Bus Diversions for Oxi Day Parade

The Cyprus Police have announced extensive road closures, parking prohibitions, and bus route diversions across central Nicosia ahead of Wednesday's Oxi Day celebrations. The annual holiday will feature an official church service at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral followed by the traditional student and military parade through the capital. To facilitate preparation and guarantee safety, parking restrictions will take effect from midnight on Tuesday along several key thoroughfares, including the Archbishopric area, Korai Street, Isokratous Street, Zenon Kitieos Street, Constantinos Palaiologos Avenue, Homer Avenue, Byron Avenue, Michalakis Karaolis Street, and Evagoros Avenue.

On Wednesday morning, major arterial roads will be closed to vehicular traffic in stages. Starting at 9:00 AM, Homer Avenue will be shut between Egypt Street and Eleftheria Square, while Byron Avenue will close from the Museum traffic lights to its junction with Grivas Digenis Avenue. Additional closures along the parade route will commence at 9:30 AM, covering Byron Avenue, Homer Avenue, Michalakis Karaolis Street, and Demosthenis Severis Avenue from the traffic lights heading toward Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue. Drivers traveling into Nicosia are urged to utilize designated parking areas, including the D'Avila bastion car park, the moat parking lot below the old town hall, the area near the fire station, and the Kolokasi opening parking lot.

Public bus services across the capital will also operate under altered routes after 9:30 AM on Wednesday. Buses arriving from Strovolos, Lakatamia, Anthoupolis, Parissinos, Engomi, Ayios Dhometios, and Ayios Pavlos will serve passengers at the Rigenis Street car park near the Solomos statue, accessing the area via Paphos and Kinyras streets. Meanwhile, bus services originating from Pallouriotissa, Kaimakli, Aglandjia, Dasoupolis, and Latsia will redirect passenger pick-ups and drop-offs to Kaningos Bridge near the Oxi kiosk.

Motorists are reminded that regular vehicles remain prohibited along the stretch of Makarios Avenue extending from the Nicosia Central Police Station traffic lights to Evagoros Avenue. Police officers will be stationed along all major junctions to direct drivers throughout the day. Spectators attending the event are asked to remain strictly on the pavements to allow marchers to pass safely and without obstruction. Authorities also emphasized that the use of drones during the celebrations is strictly prohibited.
