Man arrested after reversing into two women in Nicosia car park while over twice the legal alcohol limit

A 38-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning after reversing his car into two women walking through a Nicosia car park, an incident that unfolded just after 2am when police arrived to find the two 24-year-old victims with injuries. Officers reported that the suspect was shouting and causing concern at the scene, and at one stage repeatedly pushed a police officer and attempted to flee. The man was subsequently placed in the back of a police vehicle, where he struck the door with his hands and feet, injuring himself in the process.

Following a breathalyser test at the scene, authorities determined that the driver was over twice the legal alcohol limit to drive. Both women were transported to Nicosia General Hospital, where they received first aid treatment and were later discharged. The suspect was also taken to the same hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted injuries and was discharged shortly after.

Cyprus Police confirmed that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. The arrest highlights continued concerns over drink-driving and public safety in the capital, particularly during weekend hours when traffic and pedestrian activity in urban car parks can peak. Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to refrain from drinking and driving, warning of severe penalties including fines, license suspension and potential imprisonment.

The incident adds to a string of recent traffic-related arrests in Nicosia, prompting renewed calls from the Cyprus Police and the Department of Road Transport for greater enforcement and public awareness campaigns. Drivers are reminded that the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers in Cyprus is 0.05%, with harsher consequences for those caught well above the threshold.
