Cyprus Police Issue 608 Citations to E-Scooter Users and Cyclists in Safety Crackdown

Cyprus Police issued 608 official reports against users of personal mobility devices and cyclists during an intensive nationwide traffic operation conducted between 19 and 25 October. Figures released by law enforcement on Monday highlight a sharp focus on alternative transport safety, with the vast majority of infractions tied to e-scooter riders. Of the total citations, 534 were filed against personal mobility device operators, while cyclists accounted for the remaining 74 violations.

Failure to use essential safety equipment made up a substantial portion of the recorded offenses during the seven-day blitz. Officers cited 168 individuals for helmet-related violations, which included 133 personal mobility device users and 35 cyclists. In addition, 120 complaints were issued to riders who failed to wear mandatory fluorescent high-visibility vests, leaving them vulnerable to surrounding traffic during low-visibility conditions.

Riding in unauthorized locations proved to be the single largest category of infractions, with police filing 230 complaints for operating devices in prohibited areas. These infractions typically involve riding on motorways, main thoroughfares, or pedestrian sidewalks where e-scooters and bicycles are restricted by law. Officers also logged 33 citations against cyclists who were caught operating without proper front or rear lights.

The targeted campaign is part of a broader effort by Cyprus Police to bring order to urban mobility as e-scooters become increasingly popular in major cities. Law enforcement confirmed that targeted traffic checks will continue around the clock across Cyprus to foster road safety awareness, prevent serious collisions, and protect both riders and motorists.
