Cyprus Police arrested three motorists overnight following a series of traffic collisions in Nicosia and Limassol linked to driving under the influence of alcohol. The first incident took place shortly after 7:00 PM on Saturday in the Idali industrial area. A 48-year-old man slammed into the rear of a vehicle waiting at a red traffic signal, causing a chain reaction that pushed the stationary car into a third vehicle. Officers at the scene administered a breathalyzer test that returned a reading nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit, leading to his immediate arrest.
The overnight traffic disruptions continued in Limassol shortly before midnight, when a 35-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle near the Mesa Yeitonia roundabout and crashed into a streetlamp, knocking the light pole into the road. Police took the driver into custody after he failed to provide a satisfactory sample for his final alcohol test. Later, at around 12:30 AM on Sunday, an 18-year-old motorist driving on Griva Digeni Avenue in Engomi was struck by another vehicle that immediately fled the scene. Law enforcement officers tracked down the fleeing vehicle shortly afterwards and arrested the 45-year-old male driver responsible for the hit-and-run.
In a separate incident in Paphos, officers intercepted a car in the town centre at approximately 8:40 PM on Saturday after the driver ran a red light. Police discovered that the 17-year-old behind the wheel held only a learner permit, was driving unaccompanied by a licensed driver, and had no valid insurance on the car. The teenager also tested positive during a preliminary drug test, prompting officers to confiscate his driving licence on the spot. Traffic authorities continue to urge all road users across the island to respect signal controls and refrain from operating vehicles under the influence.
