The proposal emerged from a high-level coordination meeting attended by Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, House transport committee chairman Sotiris Ioannou, Personal Data Commissioner Maria Christofidou, and head of the parents' federation Loizos Constantinou. The gathering underscored the need for a unified approach to safeguarding both students and drivers on public school routes across the island.
Tsolaki confirmed that the Transport Ministry will lead the initiative, overseeing key steps including tender processes, technical specifications, and budget allocation. While the full rollout timeline remains under review, the minister emphasized that all surveillance measures will strictly adhere to data protection protocols set by the Personal Data Commissioner. In the interim, authorities plan to deploy additional bus escorts and attendants, including volunteer parents, to deter disruptive behavior until cameras become operational.
The recorded footage would only be accessed in the event of an incident, with authorized contractor representatives handing over relevant material directly to the Cyprus Police for investigation upon formal complaint. Parents who object to their children being filmed will be informed about the security system in advance and can choose alternative transportation methods. Education Minister Michaelidou stressed that the goal is to address isolated cases without casting suspicion on the broader student population, noting that the government is already making significant investments in improving school transport infrastructure.
Should a verified complaint arise, both parents and the school will be notified, and depending on the circumstances, families may be held financially responsible for any damages incurred. The proposal reflects growing concerns among drivers and commuters about safety and conduct on busy routes, particularly during peak morning and afternoon hours when thousands of students travel between homes and schools nationwide.
