Cyprus Fuel Sales Surged 20.8 Per Cent in September as Driver Demand Rebounded

Total sales of petroleum products in Cyprus surged by 20.8 per cent in September 2026 compared to August, reaching 146,963 tonnes as regular driving patterns and commercial activity returned after the summer break. Figures released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) show that overall fuel consumption was also up 1.5 per cent when compared to September 2025. Filling stations across the island recorded higher traffic, delivering 62,557 tonnes of fuel, an increase of 1.7 per cent over the same period last year.

On a year-on-year basis, individual product categories presented a mixed picture. Motor gasoline sales rose by 1.5 per cent, while liquefied petroleum gas posted a strong 12.1 per cent gain and asphalt sales climbed by 5.1 per cent. Light fuel oil grew by 1.6 per cent and aviation kerosene provisions rose by 1.4 per cent. Conversely, road diesel dropped by 1.4 per cent compared to September 2025, alongside declines in marine gasoil by 3.6 per cent and heating gasoil by 6 per cent.

The month-on-month recovery from August was driven by heavy fuel usage across transport networks. Road diesel sales jumped by 21.4 per cent in September, while motor gasoline demand grew by 10 per cent as residents returned to regular working schedules and school commutes. Marine gasoil recorded the largest single monthly leap at 51.3 per cent, with aviation kerosene also expanding by 1.9 per cent. To cover this rapid rise in consumption, total petroleum product reserves in Cyprus decreased by 16.2 per cent at the end of September compared to August.

Across the first nine months of 2026, total petroleum product sales recorded a modest 0.7 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period of 2025. The steady demand underscores ongoing resilience in island-wide mobility and transportation activity.
