An 18-year-old male is in serious but stable condition at Nicosia General Hospital after a motorbike crash early Saturday morning. The incident took place shortly after midnight around 12.20am when the rider collided first with a bus and then with the wall of a house. He was initially rushed to Famagusta General Hospital where doctors diagnosed an epidural haematoma and spinal fractures. Because of the severity of the injuries he was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital where he remains under observation.
The crash has raised fresh concerns about road safety for motorcyclists on Cyprus roads. Motorcycles account for a significant share of serious injuries on the island and the A1 and A6 highways are known for higher traffic volumes during night hours. Authorities stress the importance of wearing approved helmets and protective gear, and they remind all road users to respect speed limits and maintain safe distances, especially when sharing the road with larger vehicles such as buses.
Cyprus Police have opened a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses and are seeking any witnesses who may have observed the bus or the house wall impact. The probe aims to determine the exact sequence of events and to identify any possible traffic violations.
Road safety advocates urge the government to consider enhanced lighting on residential streets and stricter enforcement of existing regulations for young riders. Until the investigation concludes, drivers and riders are advised to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity on the roads.
